As early as World War I, the U.S. Army had been looking for a fast, lightweight all-terrain reconnaissance vehicle. In early 1940, the Army put out a call to 135 automobile manufacturers asking for a running prototype for such a vehicle in just 49 days. Only 2 companies responded to the call and only one company was able to meet the challenge. The Bantam Car Company produced the first 70 precursors to the Jeep. Willy's-Overland and Ford soon followed with their own prototypes and both won contracts to fill the military quota of 700.000 vehicles.
The jeep served well beyond it's intended purpose. It was used as an ambulance, equipment hauler, tractor, and railroad locomotive. The flat hood served as a card table, dinner table, operating table, and altar. It was loved by the troops and many believe that the Jeep won the war for the Allies..
