Old-time Walk of Fame in downtown Phoenix. One for the history and/or celebrity buffs. Coordinates take you to the site on the NW corner of Central Ave and Monroe St. Cache is located a short walk away at another historic building.
The site is Hotel San Carlos, at one time it was Phoenix's premier hostelry. And when Hollywood stars were in town, that's where they stayed. After all, it offered elevators and "automatic cooled air", a kind of forerunner of air-conditioning, and ice-water spigots in the rooms. The sixteen stars in the sidewalk were put in in 1993 to commemorate the visits of luminaries of their day such as Spencer Tracy, Mae West, and Gene Autry. The San Carlos was completed in 1927 and was built on the site of Phoenix's first school, an adobe building built in 1874. Dwight B. Heard - as in Heard Museum - financed the project. For many years, it was where the in crowd crowded in for lodging, dinner, or dancing. It was famous for its onion soup. The hotel was renovated in 1955 and today still retains many of its original architectural and design touches. Even the original elevators still work and in the basement - and still working - is the well from the old school building.
In order to get the cache coordinates, you must use the alphabetical lists below of some of the stars at the site. Each star is given a value to be used to complete the coordinates.
To acquire the North coordinates (33° XX.XXX) find the stars in sequence south to north and use given values for each star from the list.
To acquire the West coordinates (112° XX.XXX) find the stars in sequence east to west and use given values for each star from the list.
