Geocache Description:

Holmes Crossing Sandhills Ecological Reserve southwest of Fort Assiniboine.

This area of stabilized sand dunes has a high degree of ecological diversity. Many of Alberta's tree species can be found here: on well drained, sandy sites jack pine is the dominant tree species; in areas of intermediate moisture white spruce and trembling aspen are more common; in wetter areas look for birch and balsam poplar; and in poorly drained boggy locations you'll find black spruce and tamarack trees. This is an interesting place for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing and birdwatching. Parking is available at 54 17.690N 114 51.890W. Although you might be tempted to bushwhack to the first cache, please follow the trail to 54 17.552N 114 52.210W, head south to the top of the next hill, then east on the Peter David Circle Trail. There is a considerable amount of wildlife in the area, including bears, so please don't leave scented items in the caches. Cache container is small and covered in camo tape.
