Geocache Description:

This is a great hike through some of the most spectacular desert canyons in Southeastern New Mexico. We have been to this area many, many times and it is a favorite hike of ours. It was our first hike together on Valentine’s Day several years ago and so we decided to hide a cache here on Valentines Day 2006.

The cache is in an ammo box and initially contains the Last Chance Valentine’s Day Love Bug (travel bug on a pink heart key chain), a big red Hershey kiss pin, a Valentine pen, an “awesome” rubber bracelet and a log book and pen.

The hike is on a Forest Service semi-maintained trail so it isn’t too difficult. We hiked it with our Grandson who was about 7 at the time. He made it OK but was pretty tired when we got back.

Watch out for the usual creepy-crawlies. We heard a rattlesnake buzz today but never did see it. Watch out when crossing the little stream. The stepping stones are slick and Patty usually falls in.

The cache location can be accessed from several different locations, by way of Sitting Bull Falls Trail, White Oaks Canyon Trail, or Last Chance Canyon Trail. You can see a trail map at the Last Chance Canyon trail head Host area just inside the Sitting Bull Falls Park.

Take SR 137 off US 285. Follow SR 137 to CR 407. Follow CR 407 to N32° 15.479 W104° 41.804. Park here at the “Dead End Road” sign or follow the road on to the dead end at N32° 15.377 W104° 42.098. This road is really rough but my old pickup makes it OK but you need a high clearance vehicle that you don’t mind getting a few scratches on. Follow Trail 276 to the cache.

If you want to continue your hike after you find the cache, continue up the trail to N32° 15.262 W104° 43.173. Here you will find the “Junction F” trail sign. It will show you about 5 different routes that you can take from this point.

Enjoy the hike with someone you love.
