Geocache Description:

I've always wanted to place a cache on this little island... But it was usually out of reach!

OINK!

Well, what did you expect? It’s on PIG island!

Situated on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, on an island smaller than most lots in a new subdivision. This cache is only accessible by boat in the summer, or on foot (or skates) in the winter. In the spring and fall months the water level is low enough to wade through, however it is a long way down from the top of the canal wall to the bottom at these times. Swimming in the canal is not recommended, as it will certainly attract the attention of passers-by. Stealth is required at all times, so night visits would be wise. You can rent a paddle boat about 2km southwest of the cache location, but expect to spend at least an hour getting there. The canal is open to pleasure boats, and it is connected to the Ottawa River about 5km north of Pig Island. You will pass through 8 locks to get to or from the Ottawa River.

In the winter there are some important things to remember. On the weekend there are events and displays on the ice in front of the island. You will not be able to access the cache undetected at these times. Night-time visits are a good idea once again. Also, during mild spells the canal is closed to skaters. At this time the stairways are barricaded and red flags fly. If you are caught on the ice, you will be subject to a $150 fine.
