Acheron river in Thesprotía in Epirus, Greece, was thought in ancient times to go to Hades because it flowed through dark gorges and went underground in several places; an oracle of the dead was located on its bank.
The location where you seek this cache is far from the original river locale described above (thank goodness) and was placed during one of my frequent visits to my parents who live in the area.
Acheron Cutting lies along the Maroondah Highway only some 4 or so kilometers from Alexandra, on the way to Victorian snowfields.
As you pass through the cutting you will find a small dirt road (not very long) that takes you up to a lookout where you can view the valley and the hills that surround you.
Typical of an Australian summer view, the surrounding area is dry and brown, but during the wetter months it become a lush green location. In winter the fog lifts about 4:00pm and will resettle around 5:00pm (according to the locals) so you may not catch much of a glimpse from the lookout during the colder months.
You seek a 2 liter sistema container which has been hidden inside an ammo can, painted to match the surroundings. Hopefully the double protection will keep moisture at bay.
The trek down to the cache location is not overly steep, but if you have chiildren, it would be best to hold their hands. I would expect that my 5 year old would have no problems here.
The cache, when placed, container an assortment of small toys, precision screwdrivers, pointy pliers, balls and the usual log book and pen.
