Geocache Description:

This cache is dedicated to those people who make small town life what it is. Both good and bad. It is not meant to be hard in anyway. Sites are all easily accessible and convenient by car. Just enjoy the tour and take in the scenery.

This cache is dedicated to all those people throughout the times that have done a lot of wonderful things for the town of Underhill. This cache will take you to a part of town steeped in history and town pride. Or at least those people who live there will tell you that.

We called it the semi-historical tour because some of the things listed, sites visited or people that certain things are dedicated to may or may not go down in history as significant events. Anyway you ready to get started? At each of the locations below you will need to do a little work. I mean very little work, as all of the locations are easily accessible from your car. If you choose to you can do this one without ever getting out of the car until the final stage. In the snowy months you can drive to within 100 feet of the final!

Initial Contents of the Cache are
Logbook
Pen
50 Cent Euro Piece
One dollar Barbados, I think it is one of Crowbait’s
Alien Parachute Guy
A Homie Figurine
USA Patriotic Pin
Small Compass
A small container suitable as a Micro cache

To achieve the final coordinates you will need to find the numbers with which to replace the letters in these coordinates:

N 44 AB.CDE
W072 FG.HIJ

Site #1 – N 44 30.334 W072 50.831 – This will take you to one of my favorite jumping off points for spending time on our big mountain. The historic part of this is that many of the trails, fire roads, etc were created by the CCC during the depression. My family and many others have spent many wonderful days hiking the mountain here. At this location you will find a bulletin board. On this board you will find a number that anyone wishing to do research in the park needs to call. You will need to call this number and ask the operator for the secret number. No, just kidding, you just need the last number of the phone number to replace C in the coordinates with.

Site #2 – N 44 30.429 W072.52.803 – Here you will find what is described on this webpage (visit link) as one of the pioneering ski slopes in Vermont. No longer operating you can still see some of the remnants of the lift towers etc. Please note that this is private property and is very clearly marked as such. You do not need to leave the roadway to get the answer to the following question. If you are facing uphill on the road, to your left you will see a number of concrete pads in a group. Count the number of concrete pads you see and subtract one and then replace D with the number. If we have a lot of snow, you should be able to see the metal rods sticking out of the top of them.

Site #3 – N 44 30.921 W072 53.065 – This is one of the best winter activity areas in Underhill. Recently purchased by the town to preserve for future recreation of the townspeople, this area has been featured in several newspapers recently. You will need to know the year that this place was purchased and conserved and take the last number in that year to replace F in the coordinates. For a little info on this place you can go to (visit link)

Site #4 – N 44 31.535 W 072 53.100 - Some of you have already visited this area only from another means of access. At this location you will find another sign. On this sign will be some stated purposes of this area. You will need to replace A with the number of stated purposes.

Site #5 – N 44 30.530 W 072 53.744 – Remember that wonderful old quote your grandfather used to tell you about walking to school, uphill both ways, in ten feet of snow, etc etc. Well, at this location you will find that spot where some of them may have had to walk to. Here you will get to replace two of the letters in your coordinates. To find the first, replace H with the District No that this was the school for. For the second, you will replace I with the third (the tens place) number in the year that the school was last used as a school. The school was closed due to a fire that gutted it one early morning in that year. The Underhill Historical Society has done a wonderful job of rehabbing the first floor for public use. At a recent visit by my den of Cub Scouts the children were amazed that there was no running water and that the kids had to use an outhouse during the day!

Site #6 – N 44 30.467 W 072 53.954 – At this location you will find a park dedicated to a really nice guy. He has spent countless hours working with the town on creating town maps that have been used for emergency services, taxes and lots of other great things. Not to mention he is a wonderful musician who can be seen playing his instrument, the clarinet, at Harvest Market and other locations. The number of letters in the parks name, use both words here, replace J in the coordinates. Ok got J? Now turn around, see the last number in the date on the Town Hall? Replace B with that number.

Site #7 – N 44 30.375 W 072 54.295 – Yup, you guessed it another sign. Use the last number of the date on this sign to replace letter E.

Site #8 – N 44 30.495 W 072 54.226 – At this location you will find a bridge. On this bridge you will find a plaque dedicated to a lady. Ignore the plaque! Find the posted speed limit for this area subtract the second number from the first and replace G with this number.

You should have all the necessary info with which to find the appropriate coordinates to find the final. Good luck, have fun and most of all take time in this little corner of the world to enjoy all that our little town has to offer.
