Geocache Description:

Mt. Ida Historic Mines

The first mining claim was staked on Mt. Ida in 1899 by a C. Bain who worked the claim with Alphonse Eiman. It had fair showings in silver with a little gold. Many holes were sunk and a small seam of rich ore in silver was found.
The Britannia Mining Company took over the property and a several tunnels were driven in following the seam. A lot of work took place by different claim holders until 1925 when the mine was abandonded.

The remains of this mining operation - 2 dark, long shafts and lots of rubble surround the scenery of this cache.
DO NOT ENTER THE SHAFTS !!! They are dangerous and subject to cave in. Cache is hidden nearby.
Be extremely careful when scouting along the shaly slopes above and below this site.

In summer, a good 4x4 vehicle can make it all the way up the mountain. In winter, this is not a good idea.
Access to Mt. Ida is via Mt. Ida FSR off Foothill Road, near the cemetery.

Providing there is little snow that is frozen or has been packed down by snowmobiles, a good 4x4 can drive about 2 Km up to a prominent road junction. You can't miss it as it is out in the open and after the 1998 fire, there are no more trees to conceal it.

From there it is possible to hike up following the main road (keep straight at all times). It took me about 2.5 hours to get to the mine, hide the cache and return to my vehicle.

HAPPY HUNTING !!!
