Geocache Description:

Geocaching history says the first cache hidden and found in the U.S. was in the year 2000. This cache was placed to pay tribute to the FIRST geocachers in American history. In 1947 Andy Dufresne was sentenced to two consecutive life terms when he was falsely convicted of murdering his wife and another man. Before he escaped Shawshank prison in 1966 he told his best friend, Red, how to find a hidden treasure (the 1st hidden cache). Andy told Red where to look for the cache and also told him to look under a rock that had no earthly business being there. When Red was paroled from Shawshank in 1967 he went looking for that treasure. Red used his compass(they hadn't invented GPS yet) to find the right area. He looked under a tree for the rock that didn't belong. When he found the rock, he lifted the cache out and looked around to make sure no one was watching (just like we do when we spot a cache). As Red opened the tin box he kept looking around as he started going through the contents inside. He pocketed the FTF prize(an envelope stuffed with $50 bills) and read the enclosed letter. Although the movie doesn't show it we're sure he signed the logbook and placed the cache just as he found it. Thanks to Andy and Red for starting this sport. We're not sure why it took so long for this sport to take off but now it's growing like crazy. This is one of our favorite movies although some parts are not suitable for children(Rated R). There is an edited version that comes on TV quite often. Our cache is a camo'd container with room for trade items and Travel Bugs.

Our first Shawshank cache was down the road aways but we kept having problems with the cattle population that lived next to the cache. After it came up missing again we moved it to a less populated area. There is a paved road very close to the cache. Lots of other cool caches in the area.
This cache is located on State Trust Land. The State Land Department has no problem with this activity, but we ask that participants know the following: A Recreation Permit is required to legally access State Trust Land. These permits are easily obtained by phoning (602) 364-ASLD.
Remember to stay on established roads and avoid any destruction of the natural resources.
