Motorway Mayhem M6 J36 - South Lakes TB Gateway Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

martlakes: Unfortunately, the cache has indeed gone.
Time to archive this one I think as there is no where else along the lane that I'd want to use.
I have, though, found a new site a short way off for a new MM cache.
Thanks to all those who visited this spot - it's been a very popular TB exchange and has lasted a year.
Cheers
Martlakes

Geocache Description:

Motorway Mayhem caches are intended to provide fairly easy drive-by caches together with useful information for travellers who are in need of a break.

As you progress north up the M6, the junctions become further apart and time slows down! If you're off to the Lakes - you're nearly there! If you're heading north, it's the long climb through Tebay gorge and up to Shap before eventually reaching Penrith and beyond. So have a break next to a nice canal here at J36. This is the 'Gateway' to South Lakeland. Many visitors pass this way hoping for a dry week in the Lakes!
(For an excellent weather forecast specifically for mountain users see: Mountain Weather Information Service)

The cache box is a reasonable size and could be a good place to drop off/pick up travel bugs coming or going to the Lakes. J36 is a definite crossroads as the A65 heads down into Yorkshire.

The cache is next to the Kendal-Preston canal and just a short distance from the motorway junction. At the junction, head east on the A65, away from the Lakes. 200m later you come to a smaller roundabout, turn left to Crooklands and Endmoor. After 300m you cross the canal on a bridge, immediately on the other side of the bridge, turn right down a dead-end road.

This old road goes alongside the canal to a house at the far end. Half-way along you can pull up almost next to the cache. Please ensure you replace the lid well and re-hide the cache so it's out of view. Please avoid 'dropping' rocks onto the box - this cracks it.

Other points: After the canal bridge, on the left, is a lay-by which usually has a tea van during the day and is popular with trucks. Keep straight on at the bridge and just around the corner is a Texaco garage which is open 24hrs and is usually ok on price.

If your dog needs a break too, you can walk along the old road and onto the canal towpath. The canal often has swans and ducks and can feel peaceful.

There's a great cache on Farleton Fell if you want an energetic walk from here GCT7E9 or a micro at Preston Patrick Church GCKTBF at Crooklands, a km beyond the petrol station.

To avoid confusion please remember to log Travel Bugs correctly and as soon as possible! Thanks.

Happy Caching.
