Geocache Description:

‘Flying Fox 1’ cache is history and I am renaming it Horseshoe Bend. It is at the site of an attempt to move the roosting area of the largest colony of grey headed flying foxes in Victoria from the Melbourne Botanical Gardens to Horse Shoe Bend on the Yarra River at Ivanhoe. The attempt failed.

A large overhead cage, which was built to acclimatize some flying foxes to the area and has now been removed. Nothing is left of the attempt. The flying foxes were harried out of the Botanical gardens where they were deemed to be an unacceptable nuisance but they found their own alternative roosting area, which you can visit by looking for the ‘Flying Fox 2’ cache. Unfortunately this cache has been archived at the insistence the park rangers.

The given co-ordinates will bring you to an opening in a fence which used to be blocked by a gate. Take 80 paces (70 metres) along the track on the other side of the opening to a bend in the track. The cache is hidden within 20 paces of the bend at 270 degrees magnetic bearing. These instructions are historical but valid. In 2019 I added a note to the logs giving further instructions which are also still valid.

BUT here are instructions which will get you to the cache more directly in 2022. Take 65 to 70  paces along the windy track to a track junction beside a very large tree. From here take 20 paces at a magnetic bearing of 225 degrees to the cache which is within 1 metres of another large gum-tree.  I cannot work out why this cache has had so few finds in the past 10 years.   I have found (and not been able to find) many more difficult-to-find caches than this one!  Good luck.  (Updated January 2023).  See the new note in the logs also.
