Geocache Description:

The cache is located off Rt. 49 in Thornton in a popular hiking area. The cache is located just off the Old Waterville Road now a Forest Service road in the cache friendly White Mountain National Forest. The trail is reached by a hike of .7 miles on the Pine Flats trail from the parking lot. At the junction of the Yellowjacket trail proceed straight ahead to the Old Waterville Road. All trails are easy to moderate and the cache is located about 1 mile from parking.

Step back into the past as you journey along the Old Waterville Road once the main route into Waterville Valley. From Rt.93 take Rt.49 E to park at a trail head found at N43.53.526 and W071.34.466. Check the map in the parking lot and start up the Pine Flats trail. Ignore the sign for the Old Waterville Rd. to the left. Follow Pine Flats for ,7 miles to the junction of the Yellow Jacket Trail on the right. The Old Waterville Rd. continues straight ahead(unmarked) After about .3 miles or at N43.54.136 and W071.33.862 begin to look for evidence of a settlement being reclaimed by nature on your right. When you are FOSSilized, you are very near the cache. Look around for evidence of what life was like for the first settlers of this valley almost 200 years ago. To make a loop trail on the return follow the unmarked Waterville Rd. to the right of the Pine Flats trail. Winter accessible.Subject to WMNF parking fee.
