Geocache Description:

Come join your guide B.S. Dru, on a tour of the Village of Blasdell, self-proclaimed Gateway To The Southtowns. The tour is free, but donations of Where's George Dollars in the cache are gladly accepted.

To find this cache, you will be required to visit three historical markers in Blasdell, in order to gather information to calculate the coordinates to the physical cache. The coordinates at the top of the page are false. They are for a "Welcome to Blasdell" sign on South Park Avenue, at the Lackawanna border, as seen below:

The Village of Blasdell (pronounced Blazedell) lies in the northern part of the Town of Hamburg. The Village considers itself The Gateway to The Southtowns of Erie County. It's name is derived from Herman Blasdell, first station manager of The Erie and Pennsylvania Railroad depot. Measuring 1.1 square miles (that's really small, folks), it was incorporated as a Village in 1898, and had a population of 2,718 according the the 2000 Census.

Thank you Wikipedia. You could easily do this tour on foot, but I imagine most people will drive between the legs. Now for the cache. The coordinates for the cache container are in the format:

N 42° AB.CDE

W 078° FG.HIJ

  • Tour Stop #1: Blasdell High School marker N 42° 47.748 W 078° 49.606
    • A = The last digit of the year "The people of the Blasdell Union Free School District erected a two story, four room frame building on this site."
    • B = Add the 1st, 3rd and 4th digits of the year "another brick addition was constructed along Madison Avenue."
    • J = The last digit of the year this sign was erected by the Hamburg Historical Society.
    • C = The 3rd digit of the year this sign was erected by the Hamburg Historical Society.

  • Tour Stop #2: Historic Lake Avenue marker N 42° 47.837 W 078° 49.794
    • D = Add 3 stories to the hotel constructed by Herman Blasdell.
    • H = The last digit of the year "The Lake Avenue strip, bounded by LaBelle Avenue on the east and The Erie RR tracks on the west was complete."
    • G = The 2nd digit of the year this sign was erected by the people of the village of Blasdell.
    • E = The 1st digit of the year this sign was erected by the people of the village of Blasdell.

  • Tour Stop #3: Thomas R. Colley memorial garden N 42° 47.854 W 078° 49.937
    • F = The last digit of the last year of Mr. Colley's term as President of Blasdell Village.
    • I = Subtract 1 from the last digit of the first year of Mr. Colley's term as President of Blasdell Village.

  • Tour Stop #4: The Cache! A 1.2 quart "lock-n-lock" container, wrapped in camo tape, that should be a super easy find once you have the correct numbers. The "cover" is a perfect fit, please replace as found, and be on the lookout for muggles when you are retrieving and replacing the cache. I've seen no posted hours at the final location, but I really don't recommend night caching.
