Walk On The Wilde Side Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

CTReviewer: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Thanks for your understanding,
CTReviewer

Geocache Description:

This multi-cache is located in the Nye Holman State Forest off Route 74 in Tolland on the west side of the Willimantic River. Total distance is approximately 3/4 mile round trip. We rated cache based upon difficulty of Stage one. Final should be easier.....maybe not!! Cache is a medium sized lock n' lock container with typical cache items.

This small section of the Nye Holman State Forest contains the Cole W. Wilde Trout Management Area (TMA), named after the late Cole Wilde who was a state fisheries biologist and former Director of the DEP Fisheries Division. This stretch of the Willimantic River from the Route 74 Bridge upstream to the mouth of Roaring Brook has special trout management area regulations for fishing and is heavily stocked with trout. These rules are designed to produce a high quality trout fishery offering year round angling opportunities for the public. Fishing is restricted to FLY FISHING ONLY and all trout caught must be released unharmed. Cachers may want to bring their fly rods when conducting their hunt!

In placing this cache, we tried to keep you out of the flood plain so that the cache would be accessible throughout the year and despite rising water levels. As a result, there should be no need to traipse through muddy areas. You can still see evidence of the flood levels in the form of debris in the vegetation that was deposited during the fall of 2005. There are no officially marked trails in the area however; they are well worn and easily recognizable.

The state-owned land in this area borders private land, so stay outside of the pasture fence with barbed wire and obey all posted signs. Access and parking is along the rough asphalt road that loops through the forest from Route 74. Parking near the last picnic table on the right will place you nearest the head of the trail you need to follow. It would be a great public service if all cachers could practice CITO (Cache In - Trash Out) as the area is often littered by irresponsible visitors. We filled a small garbage bag when placing the cache!

As a final note, be advised that the Nye Holman State Forest is open to all types of public hunting. Most hunters are required to wear fluorescent orange clothing as a safety precaution. Cachers are encouraged to do the same, especially during the peak hunting months of October through December. Good Luck! Feel free to drop our team a line if you need any additional information.
