When I lived in this area a number of years ago I had the great pleasure of being friends with a local historian. This gentleman told and showed me many of the wonderful historical sites around the old Camp Butner area. This is one spot we never visited and was indeed an area he chose to avoid. The stories of this particular area predate Butner, WWII, and even the railroad. Before the creeks were better defined, and water and sewer lines installed, this area used to be briar filled lowlands some of which you can still see in certain areas.
The locals referred to this area as "The Haunts". The stories were passed along to the kids that this area was to be avoided, especially after dark. It was rumored ghosts walked the grounds and stories were told that some who entered "The Haunts" never returned. Whether, the stories were told to hide evidence of a moonshine still or the area was indeed haunted has now passed into history.
I will say you do catch yourself glancing over your shoulder while in the area, and I don't think I'd personally want to be here after dark. I also had a terrible time with satellite reception in the area. I intentionally made the hide easy, so don't overthink this one.
Like several of the other new caches in this immediate area, you have choices as to your approach. You can bushwack or follow the power line and water easements fairly close to the site. You WILL have to cross some streams and/or deep ditches getting to this site.
I recommend using the same parking as "Squirrel's Delight", and "It's In There". If you choose alternative parking please make sure you enter the woods only via Gameland access and don't cross private property. Umstead Hospital is considered private property. It might be a good idea to waypoint your parking coordinates as well. I find it easy to get turned around in this area.
