Here’s the stuff nightmares are made of and the story
(based on true accounts) goes something like
this.
Nov. 27, 1925 - A date that became infamous in area
history because it was the day F.M. Snow brutally butchered his
wife, mother-in-law and stepson.
Elvis Riggs and Ben Aycock hunted and trapped animals all
the time to make a little money. One day, they found something they
weren’t hunting for at all, but something that lived in their
memories for years to come.
Seventeen-year-old, Elvis Riggs decided to go down into a
cellar to set some traps. That’s when he noticed a bloody tow sack.
A closer examination revealed a human ear protruding from a hole in
the sack. A head, decapitated from its body, found well preserved
in a tow sack, hanging from logs, in a broken-down old cellar, on
the Riggs’ home-place, near Selden. There was also a brand new
white shirt with a mackinaw coat and a dress coat.
That night, the young man had to sleep on the floor by
his parent’s bed because the vision was so disturbing for
him.
The head was setup for viewing at a local funeral parlor
and was viewed by many area residents. Finally, Ida Gristi, a
neighbor of the Snow’s, identified the victim as Bernie Connally,
Snow’s stepson. The information was not released to the public
pending further investigation and location of Conally’s mother and
grandmother.
Snow had killed the women earlier in the day, and hid the
bodies underneath the floorboards of his home. Snow shot Conally in
the back upon his arrival home with a shotgun since he knew the boy
would question him regarding the whereabouts of his mother and
grandmother. He decided to take the headless body to the old Bishop
place and cover it with brush and stow the head in the cellar on
the Riggs place thinking he would come back for it later. He then
burned the bodies, one piece at a time, in the family fireplace
over a two-day period.
Snow told authorities that he had taken the women along
with Conally, to catch a train in Iredell.
Ranger Stewart Stanley found the family fireplace
troublesome with so many ashes in it. He began poking around and
turned up bone fragments, specifically female pelvis fragments,
which confirmed his suspicions that Snow had murdered the two
women.
The sheriff ,D.M. Hassler and his men watched Snow for
quite some time. They were concerned there would be trouble
apprehending Snow because he always carried a shotgun. Snow was in
his wagon with a jersey cow tied to it and the cow came loose. When
Snow jumped down to catch his cow the men rushed in to arrest him
because he left the gun on the wagon.
Snow was found guilty and sentenced to die in the
electric chair.
But the real life story of a murderous rampage lives
on.
