Geocache Description:

A small cache (1l container) hidden near one of the blockhouses in Burgersdorp.

Burgersdorp is a very old town in the North Eastern Cape. The Reformed Church in South Africa (Gereformeerde Kerk –“Dopperkerk”) was founded in this town by the Rev Dirk Postma. The theological seminary of this church was in Burgersdorp – today the buildings of the seminary houses the local museum. Both the Dutch Reformed Church and Reformed Church buildings in town are impressive buildings to go and visit.

The town had two blockhouses in the time of Anglo Boer War (1899-1902) and was occupied at that time by the English forces defending the Cape Colony against the Boer Forces from the north. The row of blockhouses stretched from Colesberg and Bethulie to Aliwal North as this was the border of the then Cape Colony. These forts were built to guard the towns and to keep the Boers out of the Colony – these blockhouse were linked with barbed wire fences on which tins were hanged to alarm the guards as the Boers were renowned to try and cross the border in the dark of night.

The cache is hidden between a few rocks in the vicinity of one of these blockhouses. Walk to the blockhouse (which is unfortunately locked) and view the town and see what a fortress the blockhouse still is. Try to imagine the summer days in these fortresses – with temperatures in the high 30°C and lower 40°C and winter nights that can drop as low as -15°C.
