Ammo box located off Cooper's Furnace trail. Stop to take in the nature and read the interperative signs, or take the Laurel Ridge Trail to the Allatoona Visitors Center and Museum.
Cooper's Furnace is all that remains of the pre-Civil War town of Etowah. Built in the 1830's by Jacob Stroup, the foundry was bought by politician Mark Anthony Cooper in 1844, soon after losing the election for governor in 1843. After the outbreak of the Civil War, the Confederate army under control of General Joseph E. Johnston took over the operations at the furnace. Johnston positioned men at the top of these hills, the Allatoona Mountains. Union General Jacob Cox's men advanced towards the furnace along the railroad bed. After a brief skirmish, the Rebels retreated south of the Etowah River and the Union Army captured the irons works and completely destroyed the city of Etowah, a major target of the Atlanta Campaign, which as of 1950 is located under the waters of Lake Allatoona.
Terrain gets pretty steep; I would sugggest a walking stick. Hike round trip is about 1.5 miles. The trail has many markers and informative signs along the way. Be sure to hike down to the furnace itself or take advantage of the views on one of the overlook platforms off the trail. Cache is a well stocked ammo box. Have Fun and enjoy the cache!!!!
