Buckeye Cemetery is located about one mile east of U.S. Route 52 on Ohio Furnace Road in Green Township...
It is one of those cemeteries with distinctly older and newer sections... As you enter from the parking area you will notice the age of markers to the right immediately... Front and Center as you enter are the graves of William Kellogg (1828-1913) and his wife Thuza...Kellogg was an early Green Township Trustee... A Farmer as well, he and his wife raised 8 children...
Pioneer and war hero stories are the history lesson here as in all of these quaint little cemeteries...
Leveny McManigal (1808-1887)rests in peace here...Her husband James (1798-1860) was arbitrating a disagreement when he was murdered because of the decision he rendered...
Walk back through the older section toward a huge tree... When you are close to the hide, you will see the marker of Francis Story..The Biography of Francis Story done by his Great-Great-Grand Daughter said he settled on a farm here...He entered the Civil War effort in 1861 with Battery L, 1st Ohio Light Artillery, joining up at Portsmouth...His oldest son William joined the Ohio Volunteers, 56th Infantry unit... The family never saw William alive again... By March 1862 he became ill and died...The next oldest son reportedly joined up with Battery L at the age of 13 years old...He wanted to carry word of his brother's death to his father Francis ...After the Battle of Gettysburg, Francis mustered out of service in 1865 with a disability pension from helping lift cannons over fences and large rocks during the war...
Find the Story graves and keep walking...You are very close...Original Cache was muggled... Replacement cache is a camouflaged large pill bottle with a new log book, policeman, construction worker and construction sign... Bring a pen...
The stories of many more gutsy pioneers and brave soldiers dot the hillsides... It's well worth the trip out for the cache...
