Welcome to the Zoo Traditional Geocache

Welcome to the zoo.  No, we don't mean the place you go to every weekday around 8:00 am, but Connecticut’s only zoo. It is located in the 181 acre Beardsley Park that was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted of Central Park fame.  The Pomperaug Trail to the Housatonic River starts at the north end of the park.  The Peconic River flows through the park and is dammed to form Bunnells Pond. You will find a picturesque stone bridge to nowhere (actually a minuscule island in the Lake), but the zoo is the main feature.
 
The zoo is a great place to bring the kids to see the Amur tigers that were born there and an interesting South American rain forest with lizards and monkeys and all that good stuff.  Don't forget to ride on the ancient carousel and see the huge collection of wooden carousel horses.  There is an entrance fee for the zoo, but you do not need to enter the zoo to find this cache.

Other Useful Information - You will find parking on public streets which will be closer to the cache than parking at the zoo itself.  In fact, you can't get there directly from within the zoo. The park closes at dusk all year round and the gates are locked at that time.

Wait, there's more - This cache is part of the Bridgeport Geoathlon series which consists of three geocaches. The others are “P.T. Barnum's Front Yard ” (GCTPVY) and “90 Acres That Isn't” (GCTPXK).  Complete all three and you will receive a personalized 5 x 7-inch certificate indicating that you have explored Bridgeport with your GPS in hand.  Just inform CTGeoHam by e-mail that you achieved the goal and please indicate the name or handle you want on the certificate and your e-mail address.  A JPEG version will be e-mailed to you.
