A fairly short multicache visiting the burial place of an 18th century black slave. THIS CACHE IS NOT RECOMMENDED AT NIGHT IF YOU ARE OF A NERVOUS DISPOSITION !!!!!!
Scipio Africanus was born in about 1702. Little is known about his short life but it is known that this was not his real name. He was a servant to Charles William Howard, the Earl of Suffolk, who lived in the Great House at Henbury. He died on December 21st 1720 , aged 18 and was buried in St Marys graveyard. The epitaph on his headstone reads " I who was born a pagan and a slave now sweetly sleep a christian in my grave ". There were about 10,000 black slaves and servants in Britain in the early 18th century but this is one of the very few memorials to them. At present the orinal Scipio Africanus gravestone is missing. It was situated just off the pathway leading towards the main entrance ( on RHS of path as you look at the church ) Virtual cache 1 :- N51 30.412 W2 37.864 There is ample parking space close at hand.
