"Old Wheelersburg Cemetery" is located between Old US 52 and Sheila Blvd...Sprawling out for 23 acres, the interments here read like the "who's who" among early pioneers...A tornado in 1968 came straight over the hill here destroying and overturning many tombstones dating back to the 1700's...This is one of the very old larger cemeteries in Scioto County and is still used...
There are literally veterans from every war since the Revolutionary War here...The valor they showed is to be respected... Their sacrifice duly noted... Such admiration should be given the settlers resting here as well...Pioneers and others previously buried on the banks of the Little Scioto River were moved here in 1917, according to Porter Township records... Known previously as the Northwestern Territory, Scioto became a county in 1803...Settlers that got off the boat headed here in the late 1700's were quoted as saying "We're heading to the Northwest Territory where wild beasts and Indians roam"...They settled mainly along the Ohio and Scioto Rivers and their smaller tributary streams...Their trials and suffering brought the wilderness here from it's virgin wildness to the realms of civilization...Many of those stout and courageous families rest here... The list of names of those buried here that had indomitable energy of character sounds like the "who's who" of local history- Salters; Price; Salladay; Lindsey; Cadot; Bliss; Baer; Corwin; Cranston; Crichton; Dever; Fleming; Flanders; Duduit; Edgington; Edward; Glidden; Kittle; Ingles; Hartley; Haseltine; Haskins; Livingston; Merrill; Montgomery; Moore; Munn; Pixley; Powell; Powers; Preston; Sumnar; Sebring; Savage; Turner; Vincent; Warren, Welch, Wilson - All of these name sakes were the first to put roots down here...Many of them came here directly from Germany and Dutch lands... The French Grant Settlers established communities as early as 1796 here on land purchased by France from the Ohio Company... Ironically, Ruby "Young" has the "oldest" tombstone still standing...Her generation of the late 1700's shot bear and buffalo and wild boar here...They heard of indian attacks routinely... From Ore and Brick Blast Furnaces to Grain and Saw Mills to River Ports to Steel Factories to Plastics... Modern technology has brought us a long way since then... Pay your respects to these great war heroes and pioneers whose convictions, ingenuity and courage paved the way for those of us that came after... Drive up the hill and back to the rear of the cemetery...Get out the passenger side door and walk straight ahead and down the hill slightly toward the perimeter of the cemetery...Don't walk into it...Cache is a small camouflaged thermos bottle with a log book...Bring a pen...
