This is an easy cache for anyone to get to. It’s where the aluminium smelter would have been had approval been granted.
The salt marsh here is of national importance given its size and that it’s intact from the sub tidal zone to the dunes. It is one of the last unmodified margins of the harbour.
Until the mid 80s this area was designated as industrial. There were proposals for aluminium smelters back in the 70s and again in the 80s. There was an enormous public reaction against these proposals and sparked the formation of the Save Aramoana campaign.
Please avoid leaving the track especially onto the mudflats.
While in Aramoana take a walk around the village and the beaches. There is a wide variety of wildlife in this area with birds being prolific. Albatross can often be seen easily from the end of the mole. Yellow eyed penguins, little blue penguins and seals live around the area.
The cache is hidden close to the track. It is a 500ml snaplock camo painted container not visible from any distance. There is room for some small swaps.
