Geocache Description:

Near the Messalonskee dam that had collapsed last summer after it was repaired. The cache can be found in the trees by the river. Use caution as the area is commonly used by fisherman. You can park at 44 32.109, 069 39.067 (don't block the gate)

When a portion of the Union Gas dam, the lowermost hydro-electric dam on the stream collapsed. Soon after, the dam's owner, Florida Power & Light, drained the dam's impoundment in Waterville for safety reasons. In September, the company announced that it was removing the center portion of the dam this fall for safety reasons. The company said it has yet to decide if the dam will be rebuilt next year.

The dam's collapse revealed a free-flowing portion of the stream that has not been seen since the 1920s. Within several weeks, the impoundment began to vegetate and by September the vegetation was chest-high in places. The revealed stream is quite scenic, with numerous rapids, riffles and ledge drops over a clean bed of gravel, boulders and bedrock ledges. Soon after the impoundment was drained, the stream section was surveyed by staff of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission. Their initial survey indicated much of the revealed stream has the proper depth, substrate and current velocity to host juvenile Atlantic salmon. With the scheduled removal of the center portion of the Union Gas dam, it is possible that Atlantic salmon may venture into the restored area of the stream during this fall's spawning season.
