Geocache Description:

Cache is located by the last remaining building of the old Mobile Oil Refinery.(Update: The building has been torn down) After losing 3 ammo boxes here, you now are looking for a large bison tube attached to limb. You can park right in the street. Please rehide like you found it.

This is all the remains of a once thriving oil refinery. This was the last of 3 refineries that started back in the late 1920's.
When I moved to Augusta back in the early 70's, this was the biggest industry in Augusta. It seemed like everyone worked at the refinery, and a lot high school age kids just assumed that the refinery would be there for them like it was for most of their parents. But like the old saying goes,"All Good Things Must Come To An End" and like so many oil boom towns that were around the area had gone so now has the refinery.

Mobile closed down the refinery in 1983 and moved to Beaumont Texas, taking with them some of the workers but most stayed here because Augusta was home. Some people found work at the Texaco refinery in ElDorado, but most had to find another field of work.

It was finally torn down and sold for scrap. But we still have some of the long term affects of the good times, long after it is gone. We now have lots of ground pollution, which they are still 20 years later trying to figure out how to clean up.
