Shell Island Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Isonzo Karst: Trail's End Boat Ramp (Parking Area) is closed, at least for now. Changed hands, and all the old cleared out. Gates locked, no entry. Talked to a couple of locals, evidently it may reopen as a camp ground, and when that happens the ramp there will likely be available again, if with fee attached.

On discovering this, I backtracked to the county ramp on the canal at N28° 45.240 W082° 13.810 and paddled from there. I've meant to do this in past, never have. The mile or so of man made canal down to the river is actually kind of nice - been there long enough to be bracketed with nice cypress, and full of birds. Got clear out and mostly all the way back without encountering any airboats, which was nice. River lovely, as ever.

Made it up to my cache, couldn't come up with it. The end

Geocache Description:

An ammo can in the Withlacoochee State Forest Jumper Creek tract. On the west side of the tract, boat access from the Witlacoochee river. About 2 miles by river from the nearest ramp.

The one bit of high ground along this stretch of the river. Cache is a bit beyond the camp area on down the trail, somewhat off trail. The late winter tangerines are good.

Coords below are for the nearest ramp, at the end of Trails End road, $2 ramp fee, usually waived for canoes or 'yaks.

A gorgeous hunk of wild Florida, about 6 miles of river here with a tract of State Forest on the east bank, and SWFLWMD lands on the west. Birds, birds, birds: ospreys, eagles, white ibis, great blue herons, limpkins, kingfishers, little blues, glossy ibis, a myriad of songbirds, turtles, gators, otters. What a place. There's so little reliable dry ground in the land between Jumper Creek and the Withlacoochee that where it exists it's called an Island. This is Shell Island, somewhat north of Burnt Island, Cabbage Island and The Wonders. The Wonders! how can you not want to go there?
