Geocache Description:

This traditional geocache is located in Hadleyville, Guysborough County, near the waters of Chedabucto Bay. The community of Hadleyville was formerly named Oyster Ponds.

The parking coordinates, for seeking this cache, are next to a small Anglican graveyard at
N 45’ 27.600 W 61’ 17.049. The church was disassembled a couple of years ago but continues to live on, reassembled, as a home on the South Shore.

The trailhead to Oyster Ponds is located at N 45’ 27.566 W 61’ 17.028. Although this is a public road, do not attempt to navigate it with a vehicle. Oyster Ponds was once a tidal harbour complete with a breakwater and moorings for the local fisherman. The beach has evolved to create the enclosed freshwater ponds inhabited by black ducks, muskrats and trout. It’s not unusual to see eagles perched on the trees of Carr’s Islands.

The geocache is placed on Oyster Point (the dry portion) at N 45’ 27.342 W 61’ 15.785. The ‘wet portion’ stretches out under the waters of Chedabucto Bay, as a long narrow shoal, with waves breaking crisscross along its length.

If you time it right, you can walk out on the shoal at low tide, to within 10 meters of the submerged remains of the Westport. The wooden, coastal freighter went down on a “dark and stormy night” in the early 1930’s; after running aground on Oyster Point. At high tide, you will have to be satisfied with seeing the waves break over the shoal, just a short distance offshore.

Incidentally, ‘all hands’ on the small, coastal steamer were able to reach the safety of the Oyster Ponds beach. They were ‘taken care of’ at the Hunson’s after they made their way inland.

The cache originally contained: bungee cords, nautical wooden crafts, a rubber duck, a marine safety whistle, a maple tap, shamrock dart flights, a yellow foam ball, a 5 pack of dice, a bumblebee stamp, a brass bell, and the DVD “Captain Kidd”. Sign the log for credit.

While you’re here, take a ‘Titanic’ moment… stretch out your arms, close your eyes and connect with the ocean.
