Geocache Description:

A beloved child has got many names, just like Svanninge Hills. These hills are called ’The Alps of Funen’, ’The Mountains in Front’ and ’The Outer Mountains’. The name ’The Alps of Funen’ was used for the first time in 1750 in a poem by the pastor Jens Sophus Bang from Ollerup. The name thrilled people but at the same time other people were outraged by it. In 1882 the Danish geographical magazine ’Geografisk Tidsskrift’ wrote: ’If a foreigner comes to Faaborg having travelled in Switzerland and he then learns that we call this little hilly area by that pompous Alp name, he must find us too ridiculous in our national vanity – or a trifle narrow-minded’.
