Aunt Bee was the aunt of Sheriff Andy Taylor in the small town of Mayberry. She helped as the housekeeper for the widowed Taylor and his son Opie. She was a most excellent cook, and often prepared meals for the inmates in Mayberry's tiny jail as well, and served as a surrogate mother/grandmother figure to Opie.
Frances Bavier played the part of the loveable Aunt Bee. Or as we in the South say "Ain't Bee"..Frances was born in New York City on 12-14-02. She first appeared on Broadway in April of 1925 and had quite a successful career.A convincing actress, nobody seemed to notice or care that the New York-born Bavier didn't speak with a Mayberry Southern twang, as the other characters did.
B-E-E is the correct spelling by the way.Sure , it is short for Beatrice but she still spelled her name B-E-E. The spelling can be see on a couple of episodes, color ones. When she had the Chinese restaurant (episode #209) and when she ran for council (Politics Begin At Home episode # 200) The spelling can also be seen on almost every episode of The Andy Griffith show.
Bavier and Andy Griffith did not get along, over which Bavier was reportedly regretful on her death bed. For the remaining years of her life after leaving she would not be involved with The Andy Griffith Show, even refusing to be involved in the 1986 TV reunion movie Return to Mayberry.
