This cache has been archived.

k&p-shell: All stages have been removed, so it is time to archive this cache. Maybe the final ammo box will turn up someday, as the log book contained some interesting information.

Geocache Description:

This cache has four stages. The final three are on state game lands and can be found by staying on trails most of the time. At least one mile of walking is required.

At Stage 1, you will be able to find a date when the iron mines were established. Subtract 1076 from that date, to get a number, XXX. Multiply the number of letters in the mine founder’s last name by 90 and subtract 4 to get another number, YYY. You will most likely have to drive between Stages 1 and 2. The coordinates for Stage 2 will be 40°47.XXX' and 077°56.YYY'. Follow signs to the Scotia Range to get to the parking area. Parking for Stage 2 is available at several points along the gravel/dirt road, but it is recommended to park in a trailhead parking area at 40°47.822', 077°56.797'.

Stage 2 is a small container with the coordinates for Stage 3 which is a small container with coordinates for an ammo box at Stage 4.

There have been several cachers who have found ticks while seeking this cache. To reduce the chance of finding ticks, stay on the trails.

This cache requires at least 1 mile of hiking for Stages 2, 3, and 4. There are many trails in the area, and this cache requires little bushwhacking (except in the final approach to the stage). There are a few areas with fairly steep slopes, especially near the final stage.

Pay attention to your surroundings while seeking this cache. You will have many opportunities to see remnants of the once thriving iron mines and maybe even parts of the town of Scotia. The logbook contains more information about the area. Also, keep your eyes and ears open for pileated woodpeckers and ruffed grouse.

Note: The final 3 stages of this cache are found on PA Game Lands. Between November 15 and December 15 (except on Sundays), you must “wear a minimum of 250 square inches of daylight fluorescent orange-colored material on the head, chest and back combined or, in lieu thereof, a hat of the same colored material. The material shall be worn so it is visible in a 360° arc." All other PA Game Commission rules and regulations apply.
