Geocache Description:

4th annual Portales Heritage Days GeoCaching Event

4th annual Portales Heritage Days GeoCaching Event

NOMAD CACHERS ALLOWED At The OASIS

Date June 17th
Start Time 11:00 AM

It is that time again for the 4th annual Portales Heritage Days GeoCaching Event. This year we will be meeting in a State Park and the Rangers there are being very nice and letting the GeoCachers into the park for free. Like last year there will be two events in one. All teams will meet at the above coordinates between 10:00 and 10:45 AM each team will be given a starters kit. This kit will have several items and a list or coordinates. A few ground rules will be discussed. Then all teams will head out and find as many caches as time allows. ALL teams must report back to the above coordinates by 3:00 PM.

The first event will be the main event and will send your team all over and around Portales. The second event like last year will be “Just For Kids”. This event will be held at the starting and ending place of the meeting point. “Just For Kids” will consist of several caches within walking distance. Parents can go along with the kids and help with the GPS. The kids can exchange items in the true GeoCaching spirit.

This year we will be serving hamburgers, hotdogs and drinks, following the main event. Water will also be provided for everyone to take on the search for caches.

Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There will also be some special prizes. Teams are encouraged to stay as long as they like to visit with other GeoCachers. As an added bonus this year there will be a Desert program starting at 7:00 PM the presentation will cover the different methods of desert plants have that allow them to adapt to harsh living conditions in the desert, how they are able to conserve and store water as well as protect themselves from heat/sun not only to survive in the desert but to thrive there, and there will be both cacti and other plants that will be shown. It will be a lot of hands on stuff....people can touch the cactus and pick up the plants and discover the different ways plants have adapted. All GeoCachers are welcome to stay for this presentation.

If you plan on making it please post a note here as soon as possible. I need to know the number of team members, and the number of kids and there ages (so we can be sure to have the kids caches stocked). Please place this cache on your watch list as it will be updated as plans develop. Plan on a day of caching and fun. Remember to bring extra batteries and sun screen.

Please email me at doug.lynch@enmu.edu with any questions or if I can help with anything, hotels, camping, etc.

There are already several teams that I need to thank. TheButlerandTheQueen, Team FBI, BobKatz, keltickacher, starman99, Languard, nt7v, MiMi's Mob, SADAVIS, geokitty, and The Plugge Family.

The event activities can handle only so many teams and that limit is there with team geowalkabout .  If any GeoCachers want to come and hang out and visit they are welcome to come out about 3 PM, they can still participate and visit, just not do the search activity due to logistical limitations of managing that many teams in the searches. Sorry I will plan on more teams next year.
