"WELCOME TO THE QUAINT
TOWN OF PORT JEFFERSON"
The magnificence of Port
Jefferson Harbor continues to attract mariners, visitors, tourists,
businesses and families to an area where natural beauty is the
setting for a wide variety of human activities. Today, within its
three square miles, Port Jefferson has one of the largest
commercial business centers in Suffolk County as well as attractive
residential areas with an estimated population of 7,700
persons.
Port Jefferson has had a
variety of names, including Suwassett (a Setauket Indian name
meaning "land of small pines") and Drowned Meadow (a name chosen by
early settlers probably because much of the present business
district was a marshland that flooded with every high tide). On
March 7, 1836, it was renamed after Thomas Jefferson. The Village
was incorporated in 1963.
