Geocache Description:

This cache is set above the Wylye Valley, near the village of Kingston Deverill. The walk takes in views across the valley and several prominent Bronze Age round barrows and medieval strip lynchets or cultivation terraces. The entire round trip is around 2km and involves one longish climb.

Park at the church at N51º 07.939 W002º 13.286 and follow your GPSr signal along the road. As you walk you will see on your right a small Bronze Age round barrow in the paddock along with some glorious thatched cottages.

When you arrive at the footpath (N 51° 07.917 W 002° 13.572), climb up the slope. Close to the cache site itself is a large round barrow. This rare bowl barrow was excavated in the early 19th century by Richard Colt-Hoare, an English antiquarian who dug 379 barrows in and around Salisbury Plain as well as identifying many other sites in the area. A monument is dedicated to him at Stourhead, where he lived for a time. Take a look if you’re ever down that way. The excavation at Flint barrow uncovered a cremation burial with a bronze dagger. Another large barrow is visible to the northwest, down in the valley across the road from the dairy farm. The barrows and the lynchets are all Scheduled Monuments so please try to stay on the paths to reduce potential erosion, particularly in wet periods.
