Having been walking these hill quite a bit in the past year and have got to known a few local shepherds and having a blaw wie them, I was told a story about Alex (The Fumbler) MacGregor. Fumbler was a Glasgow Gangster during 1950's, he got his nickname as on several robberies he managed to drop either his weapon or the money. During the war Fumbler stayed with his Auntie Mae in Gateside and spent a fair bit of time in the hills around the Bonnet Stane. It is believed it was at this time that the Fumbler carved out a cave close to the cache location now filled in by land fill.
After spending several years in Barlinnie for robbery, Fumbler kept his nose clean for a couple of months, He was involved in a robbery at a branch of the North of Scotland Bank. Fumbler true to his name when leaving the bank dropped the money, Fumbler went on the run from the police and the rest of the gang.
He spent the next 5 months hiding in the cave. He went under the cover of darkness to Aunty Mae's for food. Fumbler was eventually spotted by a local and Police informed.
The Police captured Fumbler and he spent the next 15 year in Barlinnie.
The then Farmer covered the cave?
After he finished his sentence Fumbler disappeared, locals believe that he had another entrance to his cave?
Under a large flat stone!
