A large ammo box full of stuff, Idiot’s hole cache can be accessed from several different trails. There are several trails from the Freetown / Fall River state forest and a few from Quanapoag Road.
How you get to the cache is up to you, but beware that Copicut Rd is 4X4 territory from the state forest side. Some SUV’s might make it through, but I wouldn’t take the new Lexus in there! Quanapoag is equally nasty from Copicut to Flag Swamp and only serious 4X4’s will make it through (although it might be a fun time for some Jeeps!) Please don’t drive into any areas that are not for motorized vehicles! Copicut and Quanapoag are challenging and legal, but many paths off of them are not, so respect the forest please. We recommend parking at the corner of Quanapoag and Flag Swamp Rd. Just take care not to block any fire roads. From there you can use the wide, clear fire roads to get to the cache. The first few hundred feet from Quanapoag are steep and rocky, but the trails quickly level out and can be wet at times. The trail system here is also excellent for mountain biking, but I don’t recommend bikes for young children in here. The distant gunshots are a local range and are harmless; just keep in mind that hunters may be in the woods during hunting season, so use caution. Watch for muggles illegally 4X4’ing while at the cache and please put it back exactly where you found it. The trail head we recommend is at N41 43.534 W71 00.704.
By the way, Idiot’s hole is just to the north of the cache (there are actually 2 within sight, north and south). Stop by and imagine someone’s new, shiny, 4X4 up to its doors in mud, stuck in the middle. Now you know the reason for the name! Idiot’s hole south is at N41 44.135 W71 01.526
