Geocache Description:

This cache, placed as part of a series developed by Northernpenguin, is part of a series of geocaches that will introduce you to some of the Amateur Radio Repeaters around Ontario.

If you are an amateur radio operator, each cache contains the callsign and frequency of a repeater that can be heard from the cache area, so you can chat with some of the local hams on your way back to the car, or on your way to the next cache.

There is a code word and repeater call sign on the first page of the log book. Save this information if you want to go for the final later.

This cache, #16 Penetanguishene, is located in a Simcoe County Forest just outside of Penetanguishene and within 3km of the actual transmitter. This Forest, the Allen tract is surprisingly beautiful with a stream running through it.

The repeater itself is located on the radio tower of the Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene (approximately N 44 48.130 W79 55.540) As such, it will be difficult to view. Due to privacy issues for the Centre’s clients, this is discouraged and pictures are not allowed on the grounds. Please respect these. The grounds begin immediately past the superjail on Fuller Ave. but you can see the tower slightly to the northeast of the road between the pine trees from about 30m north of Sandy Bay Rd. on Fuller. It cannot be seen from Church St.

The tower can be seen from a boat on Penetanguishene Bay or almost directly across bay at Totem Park on Peek A Boo Trail (it’s a paved road).
