Welcome to Steele Cemetery in Buck Creek Township, Hancock County
I thought that Hancock County only had two iron bridges left. Just west of this location is a third. Unfortunatly, it's located on the airport's side of the fence. Do not trespass on airport property, it's very illegal! Only the Indianapolis Airport Authority gets the pleasure of using this bridge.
The Steele's were a pioneer farming family. A trust fund from the Franklin Steele estate has provided granite monuments to mark the pioneer graves.
Earliest burial was Mary A. Steele, died 15OCT1841, 5m6da.
Earliest 'grown' person buried was Mary's sister, Ann, died 1OCT1842, 16y1m12da.
Don't stop at the ammonia tanks, people will think you're up to no good. In front of the cemetery, on the road, you'll find an open gate. There is a lane mowed from the road to the cemetery through the field. A little further west is a break in the fence for field access. This is a good place to turn around, just be cautious if it has recently rained.
