Cache at Ponca Elk Education Center.
Since 2002, the Ponca Elk Education Center has been telling the tale of the Rocky Mountain elk's introduction to the Ozarks. With exhibits and interactive displays, all aspects of Arkansas' largest mammal are covered. The building overlooks Ponca Creek, which provides a natural setting for learning.
Although elk are often thought of as a western animal, the eastern elk was a native of Arkansas. After 1840, this subspecies disappeared from the state's forests and is now considered extinct. For almost one hundred years, not a single elk bugle rang through the mountains of Arkansas. Then, in 1933, the U.S. Forest Service introduced 11 Rocky Mountain elk in the Black Mountain Refuge in Franklin County. The herd did well for a number of years, but finally disappeared due to illegal hunting, natural mortality, and habitat loss. 112 Rocky Mountain elk were again stocked between 1981 and 1985 near the Buffalo National River in Newton County. The herd, carefully managed by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, now numbers in the hundreds and stands as a triumph of Arkansas' conservation efforts.
The Ponca Elk Education center is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
