Holy Apostles Episcopal/Roman Catholic Church is unique in the United States, a congregation that has both an Episcopal priest (Mike Ferguson) and a Roman Catholic priest (Jim Park) as co-pastors of a single congregation. All things are shared, including worship, except that after the passing of the Peace, Roman Catholics gather at one altar, and Episcopalians at a second altar at the opposite end of the church for the blessing and distribution of consecrated bread and wine. This makes it possible for families where one partner is Roman Catholic and the other is Episcopalian to be members of the same congregation. There is only one other parish like this in the world (in Jamaica). This church came into being in 1977 at the initiative of the Rt. Rev. Walter Sullivan (Roman Catholic Bishop of Richmond) and the Rt. Rev. David S. Rose(Episcopal Bishop of Southern Virginia) after an inspirational summer barbeque that they shared together in 1974.
