In the established church system that was in effect in the province of Virginia during the Colonial Period, a "glebe" was a farmstead tract provided by a Church of England parish to furnish its minister with subsistence and income. Glebe Farm, in the City of Suffolk, Virginia, was established some time between 1637 and 1675. Because Glebe Farm was acquired through private donation, the Suffolk Parish was able to fight off a court case in 1817-1819 and maintain ownership of the property despite both the 1785 disestablishment of the Church of England in Virginia and the 1802 legislative statute that required the divestiture of the Episcopal Church’s glebe lands in Virginia. Glebe Church itself was founded in 1640. The present building was erected in 1738. In 1775 its Rector, the Rev. John Agnew, a zealous supporter of the crown preached a sermon in favor of British rule and denounced the sins of rebellion, whereupon Col. William Cowper, a vestryman and magistrate ordered him out of the pulpit. Agnew never again entered the church he had served for 20 years; after the War for Independence the church fell into disuse and was almost in ruins by 1812. In 1856 the north wing was demolished and the smaller church repaired. The church survived the Civil War without damage, its rector serving as a chaplain in the Confederate Army. In 1960 a parish house was completed.
This is one of nine caches in a series. There is also a tenth puzzle cache (ECUSA #10).
The caches in this "Episcopal Church Welcomes You" series are: # 1 - Hickory Neck (GCV22G), Toano; #2 - St. Mark's (GCV22K), Hampton (archived); # 3 Ascension's Labyrinth (GC5M6FA), Norfolk; # 4 Emmanuel (GCV22T), Hampton; # 5 St. Martin's (GCV22Y), Williamsburg; # 6 - All Saint's (GCV230), Virginia Beach; # 7 - Eastern Shore Chapel (GCV235), Virginia Beach; # 8A - St. Aidan's (GC115FG), Virginia Beach; # 9 - Glebe (GCV23F), Suffolk; # 10 - End of the Quest (GCV23P) in Virginia Beach.
All caches are on the property of Episcopal churches in the Tidewater area. I have secured permission from the clergy of these churches (friends and colleagues of mine) to place these caches on their church's property. However, there could be muggles present at each location, particularly on Sunday mornings.
This cache is a pill bottle. Please replace and conceal the cache after you find it.
