Geocache Description:

This is a 3 stage multi cache which is fifth in our series of March Madness Mural caches. Each stage of the multi is a micro, and will give you the opportunity to view two of Vernon’s murals. Two of the stages are on private property, but permission has been given to place this cache. The final cache is a log book, but there's no pencil and of course there’s no room for trading items. You'll have to think inside of the box.

During March we hope to put out enough caches to lead people around downtown Vernon to view all of the murals, and there are 27 outside ones! The Downtown Vernon Association funded the new Sovereign Lake mural as part of their commitment to the ongoing mural project. The DVA Mural Project began in 1998 as a youth employment strategy, a means of revitalizing the downtown and a celebration of Vernon's history and cultural heritage and has been funded by the Government of Canada, the Downtown Vernon Association and the City of Vernon.

The murals have been created with photographs obtained from the local Heritage Societies and Vernon Museum Archives of actual Vernon and area residents. These murals preserve the historical heritage of Vernon and give the community and tourists a glimpse into our rich past.

The murals you will see at both locations are:

Multicultural Mural
This mural on Vernon’s Post Office portrays the diversity of Vernon. The individuals pictured were specifically chosen because they were some of the earliest pioneers for their culture in the region. From left to right, the people represented are Chinese, Eastern European, Scandinavian, English, First Nations, East Indian, Japanese, First Nations and Belgian. On the far right is Pierre Elliot Trudeau who initiated many multiculturalism policies as Prime Minister of Canada and who died during the painting of this mural. Michelle Loughery Lead Artist(113'x30') 2000

Sovereign Lake
This mural faces Highway 97 in Vernon, between 32nd Avenue and the Vernon & District Credit Union building, and is clearly visible to motorists passing through Vernon. It shows our long standing history in winter recreation and sports. In 1939, the City of Vernon donated a log cabin to a local cross country ski club on Vernon Lake. Pictured at the cabin are Carl Wylie and his wife Flora, founders of the club. Vernon Lake was later renamed Sovereign Lake after good citizen and avid skier Bishop Art Sovereign. The ski area has now become a world class destination. Muralists Steven Skolka and Tyler Toews(2005)
