Geocache Description:

Welcome to BX Ranch Park. At the end of the large field is a forested section -- a cedar forest walk with BX creek running through. Camo'd cache is small with trading trinkets, log book, pencil and pencil sharpener, hid in the cedar forest by the creek and about 5m from trail and about 700m or so from the parking lot. Very bouncy signals due to closed in trees and cliff nearby so you might need to rely on hint.

As it is a “doggy park” it is open 24 hours and “poop” bags are provided. You’ll see many dog lovers out with their dogs, especially in the open field. I'm sure you'll enjoy the coolness of the cedar forest in the extreme heat of summer. Now some history: The BX Ranch was established in the Vernon BC area in 1864. This ranch was established by Francis J. Barnard of the BC Express Company for the purpose of breeding and raising horses for use on his stage line company. The BC Express Company, known as the "BX," at one time operated the longest stagecoach line in North America. Founded in 1862 as Barnard's Express and Stage Line by Francis J., the company hauled mail, passengers and freight along the Cariboo Wagon Road between Yale and Barkerville and eventually controlled most of the traffic between the coast and the Cariboo. The company raised most of its horses here at the BX Ranch site. The distinctive red and yellow stages were a familiar sight on the road until they were phased out by motor transport after 1910. After 1920 the company lost its mail and freight contracts to competitors and went out of business, and the area was gradually turned into fruit growing orchards. In 1868 Steve Tingley herded 400 horses from New Mexico. Steve's destination was the huge 6300 acre BX Ranch in Priest Valley. The horses were bought specifically for pulling the stagecoaches. These horses were thought to be of mostly mustang heritage, although I've also heard that they were morgans. Research tells of their strength, size, willingness and good disposition. They very well could have been descendants of the original Canadien Horses. (Most of the above info has been copied from the web page of Stan and Mary Field members.shaw.ca/fieldsbxcanadians)
