Geocache Description:

The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates. The cache is offset from the posted coordinates. You will need to travel in a certain direction a specified number of paces.

The coordinates mark a very unusual geological feature for Kingwood, a lithified sandstone. Kingwood is almost entirely an ancient river flood plain and the surface sediments are soft powdery sands, silts, and muds. To find a rock of this type in Kingwood came as a surprise to me. I think the rock was lifted out of the depression in front of it by the roots of a tree that fell long ago. The wood of the tree and roots has now decayed completely away.

To find the cache, stand behind the highest part of the rock. Note the long axis of the rock and then face AWAY from the greenbelt trail at 90 degrees to the long axis of the rock.

Take 7 paces in this direction and you will encounter a tree with an unusual number of trunks. The cache is hidden at about waist level in a narrow hollow between several of these trunks.

The original hiding location of this cache was destroyed by Hurricane Ike. The location described above looks like it will survive anything nature's likely to throw at it. There were a lot of fallen branches around the rock that I hope will get cleared eventually.
