COURSE: Snakes of Nova Scotia (Native Species)
TOPIC: Identification and Characteristics
INSTRUCTOR : CasheKicker

OVERVIEW: Snakes are the most modern of reptiles, first appearing in the fossil record during the time of the dinosaurs. It is believed that they evolved from lizards and that they exploited the survival advantages to be found in a cylindrical, legless body. It is important to note that there are no venomous or dangerous species of snakes in Nova Scotia. None could do any more harm to an individual than pricking your finger on a thorn bush. Due to this fact, one of the key things to understand is that fear and loathing of snakes, especially in this province, is usually a totally irrational fear known as Ophidiophobia

INSTRUCTIONAL GOAL : During this training session students shall be introduced to all the snakes that are native to the province of Nova Scotia. As well they shall be familiarized with their various characteristics, habitat, eating habits and reproduction

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: Students will be expected to be able to identify the Snakes of Nova Scotia by visual reference as well as by understanding the different habitats and characteristics unique to each species.

RATIONAL: As Geocachers we spend much of our time exploring the wilderness and often will come in contact with its wildlife. Having the ability to identify the species of all creatures native to our province would greatly benefit us, as well as, the scientific community. Having the ability to readily identify our snakes would make it possible to educate others as well as notify the appropriate authorities should we discover a new species or one that is far from its natural habitat.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUE: Students will be need to follow a beautiful trail system that will lead them to a majestic lake that once served as a part of the water supply for the Halifax area. Along the way they must locate a series of waypoints. These waypoints shall provide the student with information. Some will just be co-ordinates while others will actually be an interpretive plaque that describes one of the various species of snakes and will provide the student with the educational basis to help them identify that species. Students will also be able to retrieve the next set of co-ordinates from each plaque to continue the course.

EVALUATION PROCEDURE: Student will be given a passing grade upon completion by correctly locating the final cache. In doing so they will have been introduced to and demonstrated a basic understanding of the species of snakes that are native to Nova Scotia.

MATERIALS AND AIDS: GPS, Compass, Basic Survival Kit, Hiking Boots, Writing Materials, Camera (optional), Water, Snack, Energy and a will to learn something new and a Caching Buddy.
