Geocache Description:

South Mountain Reservation spans the first and second ranges of the Watchung Mountains. Watchung, or "high hills" comes from the Lenape Indians who occupied the area. This area was also used by General Washington as a signal point, specifically Beacon Signal #9, to observe British troop movements. For more history see the enclosed link: www.last-exit.net/essexcounty/index.php?section=dept/p/so

Start at the dog park at the end of Crest Drive off of South Orange Ave. There's plenty of space for parking here at N40 44.383 W074 17.365. Follow the fence and dirt road/trail. Do not take the left when the fence goes left. Continue straight to a T intersection and turn left to access the yellow trial about 200yds.Parking elsewhere requires more bushwacking. Follow the yellow trail until the gps points about 200 feet off the trail. Look for the rocky hill and align youself more closely with the rock outcropping/hill by standing at the highest point facing Southwest. Look over your right shoulder, more than 90 degrees, and the coordinates for stage two can be found inside the hollow base of the tree that physically looks different at eye level. (clue provided below} The next stage is a rock that, when you're facing the flat face, resembles the shape of a tombstone. The flat face pointing due West and the back part is rounded. Stand behind the rock facing West and answer the following: A. ____ How many large deep vertical cuts on its back side? B. ____ If you extend that cut to the top, a hard to spot 2"x4" rectangular figure appears. That geometric figure has how many cuts for its sides? (basic geometry) C. ____ How many deep horizontal cuts on its back? Note: The sum of A+B+C = 5 (basic math can be applied here to get the answer. Find cache at: N40 44.(A+B),(A),(A+B) Check sum of(A+B),(A),(A+B)= 11 W074 17.(B+B)-1,(A),(C+2) Check sum of:(B+B)-1,(A),(C+2)= 10
