This is another one of our Highway 84 caches, located at the ghost
town of Dermott, Texas. This cache is named for Velma Lee Edmonson
a relative who at one time owned a home and small store nearby. She
and her sister also operated the town post office out of her home.
The town was first located near the Roscoe, Snyder and Pacific
tracks; subsequently, although Dermott had no depot, the trains
stopped to load cattle and cotton. Sometime before 1915 the town
was moved to the Santa Fe tracks, where cattle-loading pens were
built. The old remains of the highway runs behind here close to the
railroad, and at one time there was a hotel, three gas stations, a
feed store, post office, school, blacksmith shop and quite a few
homes along this stretch. The old Dermott school was directly
across highway 84. To the east of here are the remains of the Santa
Fe railroad cattle loading pens.
