Tolt MacDonald Park is a great place to go biking or hiking, or
to walk your dog. If you bring your bathing suit and a pair of
river sandals, you can even take a dip in the river after a morning
of geocaching on a hot summer day. There are miles of bike trails
up on the plateau, and many geocaches to find.
At the viewpoint near the cache, you can look East to see the
Snoqualmie and Tolt river valleys with the Cascade range in the
distance. Just across the river in the foreground is the town of
Carnation. The wide, unobstructed view from this location made it a
natural place for surveyors to locate a benchmark. Indeed, the
benchmark "TOLT" (SX1507)
was set on top of this bluff in 1937, but because of the unstable
nature of the hill it has long ago fallen over the edge.
The cliff here seems to be composed mostly of sand and gravel,
probably deposited long ago as the river below cut the valley. If
you stand at the viewpoint for just a little while, you will no
doubt hear rocks and soil falling down the slope as the cliff
crumbles away. Because of this, please use caution and keep
yourself, your children, and your pets away from the edge.
The cache is not near the edge of the cliff, and you do
not need to get close to the cliff to reach the cache.
