A place to begin an adventure. A short, rubble strewn walk to the cache
The C & C (canoe & cache) Trail is the beginning of a series of caches located within walking distance of the South Fork of the Spring River as it runs through Cherokee Village, Arkansas. We had hidden the first 4 caches in special locations before realizing how close to the river they were. Because we’ve spent the last 30 plus years paddling canoes and kayaks and the last couple geocaching, the idea of combining the two activities appealed to us. To be sure, all the caches currently involved are accessible by car, paddling the river to find them adds an element that requires different skills and a greater sense of adventure. The caches that currently make up this trail are the C & C Trail (approach from the river bridge), Cedar at South Fork (the landing looks like someone’s backyard but isn’t), the Spring of Peace (from the river look left for the running water of a faux spring and walk the left side-watch out for geezers in golf carts), the Sawdust Trail (there are closer but more difficult places to get off the river than at the gravel bar), Where Cherokee Falls (rough going if you plow straight ahead after crossing the footbridge-a muggle rich area at times) and Cherokee Trail Spirits (if you use the back door you miss most of the spirits-another muggle rich area at times). This trail is evolving so the probability exists that additional caches will be added at various times in the future.
ABOUT THE RIVER - The South Fork is mostly a slow moving, docile river with occasional exceptions where the river runs narrow or shallow. It should be considered a Class 1/borderline 2 river meaning that there are several places where you will have to maneuver in short sections of fast moving water. However, all of those places can be avoided by stopping before you get to them and dragging your boat around them via the river bank or island. Unless you are an experienced paddler do not attempt this trail if recent rains have caused the river to be on the rise. Muddy water as opposed to reasonably clear is a sign that the river is up. This river is fed by numerous springs in the area so it’s fairly cold. If you are inexperienced you are likely to turn over at some point so please wait until daily temps reach 75 or above. If you have questions regarding the paddling aspect please feel free to send them to me via a PM.
