Take A Newbie To Lunch & Geocaching Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

sept1c_tank: On Monday, July 24, The Hendricks county Flyer published a story about the seminar and the event. I am enclosing a screen capture of the two page article. In print, the story with photos covered 2/3 of the front page of section D.

"Tanks" again for coming; maybe we can do it again sometime. Archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

July 15, 10:00AM: Meet old acquaintences and some brand new cachers and welcome them into the geocaching community.

This event will be held simultaneously (in a separate room) with a public geocaching seminar sponsored by the Plainfield public library. Bring your GPSr (and a spare one if you have it), meet old geocaching buddies and some brand spanking new inductees, have some lunch (I’m buying), share photos and war stories and check out some of the local caches. Any geocachers who would like to help with the seminar are invited to contact me.

The seminar, designed for new cachers, will be open to the public but with limited and advance registration. It will include one hour of instruction in the computer lab (registering on the website, researching caches, etc.) followed by lunch at the event (optional) and some practical field demonstration searching for existing caches.

The event will be held in a library facility equipped with numerous computers and audio visual equipment for sharing your caching experiences, and will include a picnic style lunch (did I mention, I'm buying). For event participants, it is not necessary to attend the seminar, but seminar participants are invited to attend the event.

More details coming soon.

Plainfield Library at night
Please be aware
that the computer lab portion
of the formal seminar
is separate from the event itself and
requires separate registration
for a limited number of participants.

To register for the seminar you must provide your information directly to the Plainfield library. There is a limit of one person per family for this part of the program. This is because the first hour of the seminar will be conducted in a computer lab with limited space. This portion of the program will be devoted to the computer aspects of geocaching from registering a username on geocaching.com to searching for nearest geocaches and using site tools such as maps. It is designed for people who do not already have a geocaching account.

Click here to register for the free computer seminar.

This first part of the seminar will not include a discussion of GPS usage and searching techniques, but the second hour, in the field, will be, and any guests of the registered participants are welcome to attend.

In other words, only one person per family can attend the computer lab, but everyone is invited to the field test where there will be several temporary caches for practice. Although you will not be able to count these temporary caches as a find on GC.com, there will be some goodies in them for those who find them.

The Event

I am pleased to announce that TheAlabamaRambler, captain of the caching team claiming (with considerable debate) the recent 24-hour world record of 312 finds, will be assisting me with the seminar and attending the event.

The event rooms will be open at 10:00 AM with lunch at 11:00 AM. There will be a drawing at high noon for some prizes to be announced (one of them will be a 50 cal ammo can stocked with a logbook and swag). I will also be giving away a gently used copy of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Geocaching and a copy of Geocaching: Hike And Seek With Your GPS. If anyone would like to donate prizes for the drawing, please contact me.

I am working on having a laptop in the event room to project images, so get your slideshows updated and share them. It would be nice to have a GPS guru on hand with several styles of GPSrs for basic instruction and questions. If anyone fits this description and wants to help, please contact me.

Flutterbutter and myself will provide free lunch with hotdogs, potato salad, baked beans and cole slaw. We will have water and iced tea available. You are welcome to bring any pitch in dishes or non alcoholic beverages you want, but please post as a note on this cache page what you may bring.

The actual event will be closed at 2:00 PM, but there are dozens of pleasant caches in and around Plainfield and the surrounding area. We invite you to explore our neck of the woods.

I have promised to show TAR some cool Indiana caches on the following Sunday, July 16, so there is some potential for a group caching experience, probably around Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood state forests. Anyone who might like to participate in this extra-curricular activity should contact me.
