Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the very end of Route 18. It used to be within the abandoned cloverleaf of Route 18's southern terminus, but was relocated by the original CO. Terrain is very moderate and easy to walk on, just some mild brush. The Cache keeps with my Transportation Theme.

There were once more glorious plans for the Route 18 freeway in Wall Twp. It was meant to continue south from Route 138 to a terminus with three other highway routes to make a five point intersection. This would have meant a freeway would have ended at the Brielle Circle, which I don't have to tell you would have been a commuter's nightmare. However, the circle was replaced in 2001 and there were no provisions for the future highway extension. In fact, NJDOT went another step further and rebuilt part of the interchange between Route 138 & Route 18. The once proposed southbound entrance ramp was made into a northbound ramp eliminating the dangerous weaving condition (caused by the highway's incompletion) that existed. Drivers on this ramp can clearly see the abandoned pavement of the proposed extension to their right. Once open the existing ramp was closed, but not demolished. It now sits crumbling away and will no doubt be shrouded in trees in a decade or so. The cache is located within this abandoned cloverleaf and would best be accessed from E. Hurley Pond Rd. which is reached from New Bedford Rd. (south) Parking on the freeway is not recommended. The container is a small one (log only - BYOP). Good luck exploring!
